Pest Control 1 – Termites Nil

termite inspection and treatmentHaving termites in your house is not a game – or is it?

My son (who followed the family heritage into pest control), sent through this great collection of photos.

During a thorough Timber Pest Inspection he came across termites found spending time in the cricket board game “Test Match”.

The game was resting against the wall in the top shelf of a child’s closet. The termites had accessed the house via shelter tubes hidden in a small crack of the timber pier below the bedroom.

They worked their way up the internal of the wall cavity where they decided the board game looks ideal for a bit of ‘R and R’!

termite inspections and treatmentHow this termite problem was controlled…

To remedy the situation he treated the infestation using Fipronil foam which was injected into the active areas (the Board game, Adjoining wall cavity, Adjoining timber piers).

To prevent this happening again he installed a chemical treated zone to the base of the timber piers.

termite treatmentDue to the high clay content of the ground, soil had to be replaced at the base of all piers to ensure the residual effect of the termiticide chemical treated zone which was challanging due to the low clearance of the suspended timber floor construction.

What lesson can you learn from this termite story?

  • Termites don’t actually play cricket – although they may do a better job of winning an ‘Ashes Test Series‘ against England.
  • Termites will eat anything made from cellulose – even if it is a board game.
  • Not all termite treatments are the same.  Many pest control companies would not bother replacing the soil – which means the quality of your treatment could be inferior.
  • Many pest control companies offer a cheap ‘Termite Check‘, but a ‘Termite Check‘ would not likely have found this problem.
  • Ask for a full Timber Pest Inspection according to Australian Standards 4349.3. If the company offers you a cheap ‘Termite Check‘, contact someone else – they are not going to deliver what you need.
  • Based on the Timber Pest Inspection Report you might need to take further action (things that you can do and things the that pest controller can do)
  • Call a professional pest control company. Make sure that they are properly insured and have the right credentials.

Timber Pest Inspection or a Termite Check?

There is a big difference between a Timber Pest Inspection as per the Australian Standards and a simple ‘Termite Check’.

  • A full Timber Pest Inspection is much or extensive and provides you with the answers to minimise your risk in the future.
  • A Termite Check often ends up as a one page tick and flick report with little if any information for you what the problems are and what you should be doing to avoid risks of termite attack in the future.
WARNING: THE WORST thing about a Termite Check is that they will probably tell you that they have some concerns – THEN want to charge you for Timber Pest Inspection anyhow.

Why get serious about termites around your home?

Just remember that there is no house insurance that will insure you against damage to your home or contents if termites are the cause.

A lot of people think they won’t be affected by termites – but the fact is that 1 in 4 properties in Australia will be affected by termites.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
